About the Foundation
The Mukilteo Schools Foundation was founded in 1992. Its goal is to encourage and reward excellence, plus support innovation and creativity in education. The Foundation further strives to enhance community involvement and commitment to education in the Mukilteo School District.
Classroom Grants
One of the Foundation's primary means for supporting innovation and excellence is through classroom grants for Mukilteo teachers. Over the years, the classroom grants program has literally put thousands of dollars into our schools for classroom enrichment. Scores of teachers have used those grants to purchase books, supplies, community outreach projects and field trip support, all with the focus of enriching the educational experience for children.
Literacy
In 2006, the Mukilteo Schools Foundation took on a new challenge in addition to the classroom grant program. They strove to both fill a need and have a great impact on students. Working with the Mukilteo School District, the Foundation Board determined that the strongest need was in the area of literacy. More specifically, teachers believe one of the best resources they can have to help students is a classroom library of age-appropriate titles. Putting interesting books at the fingertips of students will encourage stronger interest in the fundamentals of reading and writing.
Consequently in 2006, the Foundation provided teachers with this important resource: a classroom library of age-appropriate titles. As a result of community support and the Foundation’s work, library sets of approximately 80 fiction and non-fiction books were placed in each of the Mukilteo School District’s fifth grade classrooms.
In 2007, the Foundation, along with community support provided twelve library sets to each of the Mukilteo School District’s four middle schools. The books included both fiction and non-fiction titles that were tied to Social Studies and are appropriate for the sixth, seventh and eighth grade levels.
The Foundation, in 2008, along with community support, presented library sets of fiction and non-fiction books to each of the Mukilteo School District’s fourth grade classrooms.
Teaching the Qualities of Writing by JoAnn Portalupi and Ralph Fletcher, were granted in March 2010 to all third grade teachers in the district. These instructional kits provide teachers with ready-to-use lessons on the Qualities of Writing: ideas, design, language and presentation. The lesson cards provide a theoretically sound explanation of the four qualities of writing and the role of voice in effective writing. Examples of student writing are included to support students with a clear target for developing quality work.
Non-fiction science readers have been purchased to support classrooms across the district in grades 1 and 2. First grade students learn about concepts with Air and Weather, Solids and Liquids, as well as Plants. Second grade teachers teach about Insects, Balance and Motion, and Pebbles and Sand. Teachers received the Wild Weather Library (8 titles) and the Plant Library (4 titles) and second grade teachers received the My World of Science Library (21 titles) and the Bug Books Library (12 titles) to enhance the teaching of earth, physical and life sciences.
With your help, we can ensure that our students stay on track to graduate, as well as enjoy new adventures along the way.
Senior Scholarships
With community support the Mukilteo Schools Foundation was able, for the first time, to offer a scholarship towards higher education to one senior at each of our three high schools. In May 2011 the following students received a $1000 scholarship from the Mukilteo Schools Foundation for their continued education:
| ACES High School: | Molly Polk |
| Kamiak High School: | Maisie Leese |
| Mariner High School: | Pareese Goshtasebi |
